Tuition Fees Relief

Paid third-level fees for yourself or someone else? Get 20% back on the fees above the yearly disregard.

2022 refunds close on 31 December 2026

Who it's for

  • Students who paid their own fees
  • Parents, grandparents or anyone else who paid fees for a student
  • Families with two or more students in college in the same year
  • Part-time and postgraduate students on approved courses

What you can claim

20% of qualifying fees (tuition, including the student contribution) for an approved course at an approved college, up to €7,000 per course per person, per academic year.

One disregard is taken off each claim per tax year, however many students or courses it covers. That is why a second child's fees can get full relief.

Revenue's examples: fees of €8,500 are capped at €7,000; less the €3,000 disregard leaves €4,000, so the relief is €800. Two students (€7,000 + €3,500) less one €3,000 disregard gives €7,500 × 20% = €1,500.

Good to know

  • Administration fees, student centre levies, sports charges and the USI levy do not qualify.
  • Only the person who actually paid the fees can claim the relief.

Questions people ask

More answers on our FAQ page.

We only paid the student contribution. Can we claim?

For 2022 to 2025, paying only the €3,000 student contribution for one full-time student is cancelled out by the €3,000 disregard. Two students, or higher fees, usually change that.

Do levies count?

No. Sports, student centre, USI and administration charges do not qualify.

The course is abroad.

Some EU and overseas courses are approved. We check the approved list for you before claiming.
