Leaving Ireland Tax Refund
Moving abroad? You may be owed tax for the part of the year you worked here, plus any open earlier years.
2022 refunds close on 31 December 2026

Who it's for
- Anyone who has left, or is about to leave, Ireland after working here
- Students and working-holiday visa holders heading home
- People relocating abroad for work
What you can claim
Overpaid income tax and USC for the year you leave. You usually get a full year of tax credits, but only earned for part of the year, so too much tax was often taken.
Any earlier year that is still open (2022 to 2025) is checked too. Split-year treatment may also apply: if you are resident in the year you leave and not resident the next year, employment income you earn abroad after you go is ignored for Irish tax.
| Tax year | Personal credit | Employee credit | Total |

| 2023 | 1,775 | 1,775 | 3,550 |
| 2024 | 1,875 | 1,875 | 3,750 |
| 2025 | 2,000 | 2,000 | 4,000 |
| 2026 | 2,000 | 2,000 | 4,000 |

More answers on our FAQ page.
Can I claim before I go?
Yes. If you are leaving Ireland permanently, you can claim straight away rather than waiting until the end of the year.
Can the refund go to a foreign bank account?
[CONFIRM: check Revenue's current policy on paying refunds to non-Irish (SEPA) accounts before publishing this answer.]
What is split-year treatment?
If you are resident in Ireland in the year you leave and not resident the following year, employment income you earn abroad after you leave is ignored for Irish tax.
